"That's what we're doing here," (Sen. Scott) Renfroe said. "We are suppressing the truth. The truth is what the family was created for in the beginning – that is a husband, a wife and children. That is why we are here, and this [bill] goes against that."

Renfroe acknowledge that the Bible condemns many sins, and he said the state should not seek to legalize those behaviors.

"Obviously we have sin - we have murder, we have, we have all sorts of sin, we have adultery, and we don't make laws making those legal, and we would never think to make murder legal," he said. "I stand in my belief that this is wrong, and we should not condone it as a government."

Other Republicans also opposed the bill, claiming it was a method of circumventing the voters' 2006 decision to keep marriage between a man and a woman. Critics argue that Colorado cannot afford to pay $116,000 annually for the added benefits when the Legislature may be facing a $1 billion deficit next year.

Nonetheless, the Senate passed the bill on a voice vote and gave it final approval the following day by a margin of 22-12.

A leader of a homosexual faction of Republicans is lobbying the new party chairman, Michael Steele, to ignore the suggestions of a pro-family Christian group to support traditional marriage, because the Christians are "terrorists." The attack comes from Jamie Ensley, president of the Georgia "Log Cabin Republicans," who also compared the Illinois-based Americans for Truth to Germany's Nazi party.

Senator Buttars responds to today's events (his censure by the Utah State Senate sissies):

"I was disappointed to learn of the Utah State Senates censure on February 20, 2009. However, this action will not discourage me from defending marriage from an increasingly vocal and radical segment of the homosexual community.

In recent years, registering opposition to the homosexual agenda has become almost impossible. Political correctness has replaced open and energetic debate. Those who dare to disagree with the homosexual agenda are labeled "haters" and "bigots," and are censured by their peers.

The media contributes to the problem. Increasingly, individuals with conservative beliefs are targeted by a left leaning media that uses their position of public trust as a bully pulpit. This pattern of intimidation suppresses free speech.

For the record, I do not agree with the censure. I see it as an attempt to shy away from controversy. In particular, I disagree with my removal as Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, since my work there is entirely unrelated to my opposition to the homosexual agenda.

Still, I'm a grown man and I can take my knocks. When it comes right down to it, I would rather be censured for doing what I think is right, than be honored by my colleagues for bowing to the pressure of a special interest group that has been allowed to act with impunity.

Thanks to the many citizens who have written and called to express their support. Please know that I'll live through this to fight another day. In years to come, we'll all look back at this point in history and see it as a crossroads. I have no intention of resigning."

Sen. Chris Buttars called the gay-rights movement "probably the greatest threat to America," likened gay activists to Muslim radicals and dubbed same-sex relationships "abominations."



Buttars told Cowan the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community doesn't want "equality, they want superiority."


"It's the beginning of the end," the West Jordan Republican said. "Oh, it's worse than that. Sure. Sodom and Gomorrah was localized. This is worldwide."



Buttars used a Senate blog to post his response to the latest outcry, reiterating his belief that "traditional marriage is the foundation of our civilization."

Equality Utah, the advocacy group behind Common Ground, did not demand Buttars' resignation Wednesday nor an apology.


"An apology would not rationalize nor take back his hurtful words and disrespectful attitude," said board chairwoman Stephanie Pappas.
